Kathmandu, July 15 – The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the recent rise in corona infections in the Middle East could be catastrophic.

The WHO says coronavirus infections are on the rise in the Middle East due to the low availability of vaccines against the corona and the rising incidence of the highly contagious Delta variant.

The number of new infections and deaths in Corona has dropped for eight consecutive weeks, while the number of new infections has risen sharply in Libya, Iran, Iraq and Tunisia. Corona infections are also expected to increase in Lebanon and Morocco in the coming days.

Eid-ul-Fitr, a Muslim festival, is being celebrated in the region next week. Due to the religious and social gatherings at the festival, there is a high risk of spreading corona infection in the Middle East, according to a WHO statement.

According to the WHO, Tunisia has the highest death toll from corona in the region. The number of new corona infections in Iran has doubled in the past four weeks.
