KATHMANDU, July 26 – Leaders including former general secretary of RPP Sunil Thapa, who resigned from the party, will join Nepali Congress (NC) this week.

A total of 31 leaders including the son of RPP founder Surya Bahadur Thapa had submitted resignation to RPP on Saturday.

A source claimed that Thapa has demanded he be made the general secretary even in the main opposition party and other leaders central committee members.

“They are set to be ushered in this week,” a leader close to NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba confided with Setopati. “What post they will be given has yet to be decided.”

Deuba and others have discussed about making Thapa joint general secretary but that has yet to be finalized.

Thapa had been speaking in support of republicanism in RPP. He has quit the monarchist RPP due to ideological differences. He had mentioned ideological deviations in the joint resignation letter submitted to RPP on Saturday. The party had been telling Thapa it is not possible to talk about republicanism inside RPP.

RPP leaders including Mohan Shrestha have been urging Thapa to reconsider the resignation. Shrestha pointed that Thapa has abandoned the legacy of his father Surya Bahadur Thapa. “He has to reconsider the resignation. If not, that would be a big betrayal to the nationalist democratic movement of Nepal. And it would be a grave mistake,” Shrestha stated.

Thapa is preparing to join NC along with RPP’s executive committee of Dhankuta and Bhojpur districts and a few central committee members.
