Health workers in Jhapa protest demanding Hazard Allowance

Jhapa, Sept 1 -The doctors, nurses and staffers at the Mechi Hospital in Jhapa district have staged protest for not availing Hazard Allowance pledged by the government for those working in the forefronts during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The irate health workers today put a black strip in their arm in a gesture of protest in the first round of their demonstration.

According to Dr Lenin Pokharel, a doctor of the Hospital, the protesting health workers will be putting black strip in their arm until September 8. They have not got their allowance for five months, according to Dr Pokharel.
Application has been submitted to the State Government, local administration and Hospital Management Committee to get the allowance immediately. “We have been risking our own lives to render healthcare services to the patients, both COVID-19 infected and non-infected ones during this pandemic. But we have not received any monetary reward as pledged,” bemoaned Dr Pokharel.

If their demands go unheard by September 8, they said that they will close all the services in the Hospital including OPD services, they warned.

Hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Pitambar Thakur shared that application was sent to the Ministry of Social Affairs in the State No 1 at the end of the last fiscal year 2019/20.

He was hopeful that the health workers would be provided hazard allowances very soon.
Hospital Development Committee Chair Somnath Portel however expressed his ignorance on this matter.
