Kathmandu, July 14 – CPN-UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal has promised to give a vote of confidence to Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Deuba, who is also the president of the Nepali Congress, arrived at his residence in Koteshwor on Wednesday, the day after he became the prime minister, to meet the leader who played a crucial role in the formation of the government. During the meeting, the Nepali leader assured Prime Minister Deuba that his group of lawmakers would give a vote of confidence.

Leader Nepal told the leaders of his group that he had suggested Prime Minister Deuba to make the government free from corruption and work according to the will of the people.

Recalling that UML Prime Minister Manmohan Adhikari got votes from Congress and RPP in 2005, Pandey said, “Even now, one can stay in the opposition by voting for Deuba.”

According to Article 76 (5) of the Constitution, 28 UML MPs had signed the petition. However, out of 146 lawmakers who went to the Supreme Court seeking an order to appoint Deuba as prime minister after the dissolution of the House of Representatives, both he and KP Sharma Oli failed to meet their demands.

The Supreme Court, which ruled on the same issue on Monday, reconstituted parliament and ordered Deuba to be appointed prime minister. It has also been decided that no support will be given for the appointment of the Prime Minister of 76 (5) or a vote of confidence and no action will be taken against the party.

According to the decision, Deuba, who was appointed the prime minister on July 13, has to take a vote of confidence within 30 days as per the constitution. Deuba, who has the support of 61 MPs from the Congress, 49 from the UCPN (Maoist) Center, 12 from the JSP and one from the Rastriya Janamorcha, needs a vote of confidence from the UML or JSP’s Mahanta Thakur. If Deuba does not get a vote of confidence, then according to Article 76 (7) of the Constitution, the House of Representatives will be dissolved and mid-term elections will be declared.

As they fought to save the parliament, the leaders of the Nepal group still believe that Deuba should be given a vote of confidence. But before the verdict, the 10-point agreement reached in the UML states that the government will be decided institutionally.

However, the leaders of both the groups say that the unity of the UML has been in crisis lately. Nepal group leader Rajendra Pandey says, “UML president KP Sharma Oli has reached Bolkot and said that UML will not be united.”

UML Chairman Oli, who left Baluwatar for Balkot on Wednesday, declared the leader a traitor and said that he could not be forgiven.
