Taplejung, July 19 – Farmers have earned Rs 1.35 billion a year from the sale of cardamom produced in the cardamom zone of Taplejung. Farmers have produced cardamom from different areas of the district. According to the Prime Minister’s Agriculture Modernization Project Cardamom Zone Office, Taplejung, farmers have earned more than Rs 1.35 billion from the sale of 2,000 metric tonnes out of the 2,000 metric tonnes produced from the cardamom zone.
According to statistics, only about six metric tonnes of cardamom was consumed in Taplejung. Although cardamom zone covers an area of 3,700 hectares in Taplejung, only 3,400 hectares is productive area, said Shambhu Prasad Dev, Agriculture Development Officer of Cardamom Zone.
Farmers have been cultivating cardamom in all 11 wards of Phungling Municipality. According to the Cardamom Zone Office, Taplejung, cardamom is being produced in all the six wards of Maiwakhola Municipality. Cardamom is being cultivated in six wards except five wards of Mikwakhola Municipality and Ward No. 7 Olangchungola of Faktanglung Municipality.
Farmers have been cultivating cardamom in three wards including wards 3, 4 and 5 of Atharai Triveni and wards 1 and 3 of Pathibhara Yangwarak. Cardamom is cultivated in five wards except Khamlung of Meringden Municipality and Mamankhe of Ward No. 6 of Sirijanga Municipality.
Out of the total 61 wards in the district, the Prime Minister’s Agriculture Modernization Project Cardamom Zone has been conducting programs in 39 wards, according to the Cardamom Zone Office, Taplejung.
