Kathmandu, July 22 – A Chinese professor has remarked that Nepal-China relations will move forward in a concrete way even though Sher Bahadur Deuba, a soft-spoken (pro-Indian) leader towards India, is the Prime Minister in Nepal.
Zhang Jiaodong, a professor at Fudan University’s Center for American Studies, wrote in an article in the Chinese government’s mouthpiece, the Global Times, that observers understood that the Nepali Congress would take Nepal’s foreign policy in a pro-India direction. The university has a significant impact on the Chinese government’s foreign policy.
“No matter which party comes to power, it cannot lead the country to prosperity without cooperating with China, nor can it deny India’s influence,” he said. “Nepal is also keen to expand relations with any third country besides India and China.”
In an article titled ‘Strong Nepal-China Relations Despite Pro-Indian Leaders’, he said that Nepal’s inclination towards India may increase after Deuba comes to power but it will not change the basic thinking of balanced multilateral relations between India, China and third countries. The author also explains Nepal’s dependence on India.
The article said, “If Nepal wants to participate in the world’s economic and trade activities, it has to go through the Indian route.” India’s access to Nepal is in the hands of the world. Hinduism is the main and largest religion in Nepal, so no matter which party comes to power in Nepal, it cannot withstand the influence of India. ‘
The professor said Deuba became the prime minister by a court order, adding that he had limited public support.
“It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. He was not elected by the parliament but by the Supreme Court. This means that he has the limited support of the Nepali Congress and the people, ‘he said.’ The Communist Party of Nepal is still the largest party in Nepal. If Deuba does not get a majority in parliament, the next election will not be conducive for him.
The author also gives suggestions to the Chinese government regarding Nepal policy. He said it was important for China to deepen its understanding of Nepal’s foreign policy rather than focus on leadership and changes in the ruling party.
