Kathmandu, July 22 – A search for more than 200 people in 27 states has begun after confirmation of a rare monkeypox infection in the United States, health officials said. Earlier this month, a Texas man from Nigeria reportedly contracted the disease in the United States. It is estimated that more than 200 people have been infected.

For the first time since 2003, a monkeypox infection has been found in the United States. The victim has been admitted to the hospital and his condition is said to be stable. So far no new infections have been found.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said passengers on the two planes used by the man were at risk of infection. The man flew from Lagos, Nigeria to Atlanta, Georgia on July 9 and then flew to Dallas. He has been admitted to the hospital there.

The CDC is searching for a list of passengers on board. However, the risk is said to be very low as it has been made mandatory to wear a mask on the plane.

The CDC says that the monkeypox in the group of smallpox is less deadly. The disease is found in remote parts of Central and West African countries. When the disease spread to the United States in 2003, 47 people were infected.
