The Taliban attacked major cities, intensifying fighting in Afghanistan

Nepali Janta

Kathmandu, August 3 – Taliban militants have attacked Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province, following a series of airstrikes by US and Afghan forces.

The Taliban also seized a TV station, and thousands fled the village and took refuge in the building.
A hospital doctor said, “There is fighting going on here. ’

Helmand province has long been a hotbed of US-British military operations, and its capture of its capital, Lashkar Gah, would be a major blow to the Afghan government.

If Lashkar Gah falls to the Taliban, it will be the first capital city of a Taliban-occupied province since 2016.

Radio and TV channels closed

Earlier on Monday, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting shut down 11 radio and TV channels in Helmand due to “attacks” and “threats” from the Taliban.

The Taliban have been stepping up their occupation of rural areas since the announcement of the withdrawal of almost all foreign troops by September.

The fate of these major cities, which are now under attack, is at a critical juncture. There are fears of a humanitarian crisis as well as fears about how long the government security forces will last.
