The arrears of sugarcane farmers will be recalculated after the industrialists refuse to pay

Kathmandu, August 5 – The industrialists have refused to give details of the farmers’ arrears to the government. After the non-cooperation of the sugar industry, the remaining amount borrowed from the farmers will be collected again from the District Administration Office.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between the government and farmers’ representatives at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies on Thursday. Rakesh Mishra, conservationist of the Sugarcane Farmers’ Struggle Committee Sarlahi, said that an agreement has been reached to re-collect the details of  250 million claimed by the farmers.

“It has been agreed to look into the details of the loan of  250 million claimed by the farmers from the industrialists through the district administration office within 35 days,” said Mishra.

He also said that the report of the task force formed on April 29 to solve the problem of sugarcane farmers was silent on the remaining arrears of the farmers.

“We did not agree to sign the unspoken report on the arrears. The industrialists did not provide the ministry with details of the amount owed,” Mishra said. The ministry has also assured that the district administration will take the application within 35 days and the payment will be made to the farmer within 16 days.
